Vintage 1938 Gibson HG-00 Acoustic Guitar Pre War w/ Case

Notes

  • While we believe it's possible this could be a L-00 model, we're leaning towards the possibility of this being a HG-00 due to research indicated through forums and cosmetic matching
  • Serial number is DG-5399. Code Letter FONs were discontinued after 1941, and any instruments made during or right after World War II do not bear an FON codes. FONs were first used in 1935. From 1935 to 1937, the letter appeared between the batch and instrument numbers. In 1938, the FON was changed to a two- or three-letter prefix before the batch and instrument numbers. The first letter indicates the year, the second indicates the brand (i.e. G for Gibson, K for Kalamazoo), and the third (if applicable) for electric. The FON is either ink-stamped on the label or on the back of the headstock (as it is with this guitar). D indicates 1938 specifically.
  • By 1933 Gibson had dropped the "The" from all of their logos while retaining the script "Gibson." The original thin script was replaced with a thicker font on higher-end models in the mid-’30s, and across the entire lineup by the end of the decade. This guitar has the thicker font script logo
  • Includes vintage hard shell case likely from the 60s. This guitar was brought to our shop by a nice older woman who said it belonged to her mother. She said she thinks her mom bought it in the 60s.
  • There doesn't seem to be any prior repairs or modifications! No crack repairs, neck resets, or strap buttons added as I've seen in many others.
  • It stays in tune surprisingly well, no fret sprout, bridge is lifting, low E is buzzing. Kept in half step tuning
  • Nice binding on the top and back (earlier versions didn't have binding on the back)
  • Moderate amount of cosmetic damage. One SMALL hairline crack on back of body. A couple of significant scratches near the sound hole, a few dings, and typical finish checking.
  • Bridge lifting, see photos. The top nut is chipped between the high e and b strings but not in a way that affects anything functionally.
  • Black finish with original tortoise shell pickguard
